What Makes Galacti-Kote® Different?

High Concentration of Resins -
Most elastomeric roof coatings consist of one or two polymers (co-polymer).

Galacti-Kote® elastomeric coating incorporates the highest quality resins. It is a modified acrylic coating made from a blend of styrene co-polymers (2) with an acrylic emulsion ter-polymer (3) for a total of five (5) different polymers.

With a high concentration of resins, this coating will remain flexible without deteriorating or cracking. In other products that use clay and other fillers the results differ drastically.

KEVLAR® Fibers -
To increase tensile strength and durability, Galacti-Kote® incorporates DuPont™ KEVLAR® Aramid Fibers in its coating; thus the name “Fibered” Elastomeric Coating.

Ceramics -
For a bright and highly reflective capability as well as insulating value, the addition of space age ceramics has been added. They serve much the same purpose that ceramic tiles do on space shuttles.

This space age technology of incorporating ceramics into our coating gave birth to the name “Galacti-Kote®”.

What is a cool roof?

Cool roofs are a highly reflective and emissive material that stays 50 to 60 degrees F cooler in the summer sun, thereby reducing energy costs.

What is the main purpose of white coatings?

The two main purposes are to protect roof membranes, extending roof life cycles, and to reflect solar radiation, lowering energy costs.

How cool is a cool roof?

During the summer, a typical dark roof is 150 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit at peak, while cool roofs peak at 100 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Black Surfaces vs. White Surfaces?

As anyone who has worn a black t-shirt on a sunny day knows, black material absorbs more heat from the sun than white material. Black surfaces in the sun can become 70°F hotter than the most reflective white surfaces. If the dark surface is on a roof then some of the heat collected transfers inside, resulting in increased air conditioning to keep a comfortable temperature inside.

How roof coatings affect fire ratings?

Meeting mandated roof reflectivity requirements and extending roof service life have raised the questions as to fire ratings when coatings are applied to new and existing systems. Not all coatings will improve or maintain the existing fire ratings of a roof system. GalactiKote® coating system when installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions is a Class “A” rated coating system for use on new or existing Class “A”, “B” or “C” rated roof assemblies. Do cool roofs cost more than conventional roofs?

Initial material costs are comparable with traditional roofing materials. Some cool products cost less that traditional materials, some cost up to 20% more. Cool protective coatings can be reapplied repeatedly every 10 to 15 years and reduce, if not eliminate the need for expensive roof tear-offs. Combining these maintenance savings with an average 20% savings on air conditioning costs make cool roofing a better bargain over the long term.

Are rebates available for cool roofs?

In addition to energy and life cycle savings, rebates are available from some local utility companies for cool roofing in California.

When did the Cool Roof Rating Council become the supervisory entity for cool roofs in California?

The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) became the supervisory entity responsible for administering California’s certification program for roofing products beginning January 1, 2003. At this time, every roofing product that is installed to comply with Title 24 will need to carry a packaging label that lists the product(s) reflectance and emittance as tested in accordance with ASTM standards.
